Older Adults Flock To Social Media

Incredible Growth In One Year

From April 2009 to May 2010, Pew Internet research indicated that social networking in the 65 and older age group doubled. And the 55-64 age group grew 88% in the same time period.  While the younger population still dominates the networks, older adults are catching up at a rapid pace. E-mail has long been the popular medium for the older adults. But, they are beginning to see and understand the benefits of Facebook, Twitter and other social media mediums.

Marketing Opportunity

This age group is the population that controls most of the wealth in the US. That creates a marketing opportunity. Newspapers are going the direction of the yellow pages. Other than the Wall Street Journal, almost all major newspapers are experiencing significant declines in their readership. More older Americans are getting their information from social media. And the social media is where marketers need to go to reach this market.

How does your business use social media to target older adults?

Social Networking Gets Greatest Portion Of Online Time

Social Networking Doubles The Next Online Activity

Facebook and Twitter now account for 22.7% of our time spent online, according to Nielsen. That is twice the level of online games, the number two online activity. Instant messaging fell 15% from last year. Email activity fell from 11.5% to 8.3% of our online time from June 2009 to June 2010. But, email use on mobile is on the rise.

Business Marketing Impacted

Businesses are learning to use Facebook, Twitter and blogs to reach their markets. And these trends show that this is a good move.

If you could take the members of Facebook and make them a country, the it would be the third largest in the world. Right in from of the US. Filled with articulate computer users. That is a market to cater to!

The World Increases Time Online

A study from Nielsen showed that Internet usage in April of 2010 increased by 22% over last year. That is an incredible increase especially when you consider that it is world wide!

Social Media And Blogs Lead The Way

Over 75% of Internet users visit social media or blogs when they go online. Facebook, YouTube and Wikipedia are some of the world’s most popular sources. When it comes to traffic, Facebook is approaching the level of Google. And YouTube has recently gone over 2 billion views per day.

Facebook is making changes so quickly now it is hard to keep up with. They are making a serious effort to dominate the entire Internet. YouTube is attempting to become a legitimate news source by getting into newsfeeds. Like Google, both are constantly searching for more ways to expand their bases. These will be some interesting items to keep an eye on in the near future.

How much time do you spend on the Internet? And how much of that time is spent on social media?

Blendtec Blenders Uses YouTube Videos

Will It Blend?

That is the question asked at the beginning of every Blendtec YouTube video. Take a look:

From Our December 1, 2009 BusinessAndYouTube.com posting:

Creating A YouTube Presence

One of the coolest stories about YouTube marketing comes from a company in Orem, Utah. Blendtec makes high performance commercial blenders. Their primary market has been commercial. But, in part thanks to YouTube, they are creating and selling high end versions for the home market.

Blendtech’s “Will It Blend?” YouTube Advertising Campaign

As a regular practice, Blendtec has put its blenders through destructive testing for years. Sometime in 2006 Blendtec’s marketing director, George Wright, came upon the company owner, Tom Dickson, putting a blender through one of these tests. He was testing the blenders with heavy chunks of wood.  When Wright saw this he came up with an idea that would change the company.

Blendtec created five videos to post on YouTube. In those videos they attempted to blend marbles, a rake handle, a McDonald’s Big Mac Value Meal, and the combination of Chicken and Coke. The videos were a hit and within the first week of the campaign they had been viewed over 6 million times. That is what they call a “Viral Video” on YouTube, because it spreads like a virus.

Blendtec now has over 90 YouTube videos. They have been viewed over 80 million times. And their sales have increased over 700% since the start of the campaign.
